On the 27th of February, Monday World watched yet another FIFA Best Player Award in Paris.
The star-studded evening unfolded with amazement when English duo Mary Earps and Sarina Wiegman bagged Best Women’s Goalkeeper and Best Women’s Coach award thanks to their astonishing success in Euro 2022.
Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas was crowned Best Women’s Player Award for consecutive years piping fellow nominee England’s Beth Mead.
The star of the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi claimed yet another FIFA Best Men’s Player category surpassing Kylian Mbappe. His road to epic Qatar World Cup victory pulled more votes than his PSG teammate and Karim Benzema to secure the award for a second straight year.
The Argentinian legend struck twice in the finals to close regulation time at 3-3 after which a penalty shootout named the winner. In the tournament, Messi was acclaimed as the player of the tournament, only the first player to receive the prize twice after Brazil World Cup 2014.
He scored seven goals and three assists and took over German legend Lothar Matthaus as the most World Cup appearance holder. Also, Messi showed his magic for PSG winning Ligue 1 on his debut.
On the other hand, La Albiceleste’s domination on the stage was evident as Emiliano Martinez grabbed the best men’s goalkeeper award for his unforgettable heroics in the World Cup and Lionel Scaloni claimed the best men’s coach award for leading the team to the victory.
Scaloni beat big names like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti to bag the award.

English Premier League players Kevin De Bruyne, Virgil van Dijk, Erling Haaland and Casemiro were spotted in the men’s World XI beside Mbappe, Messi and Benzema.
Beth Mead, the player of the tournament and golden boot winner in Euro 2022 missed the women’s award but secured a position in the best women’s XI team. Leah Williamson, Kiera Walsh and Lucy Bronze were also named in the best XI alongside their English mate.
Marci Oleksy, the amputee footballer, bested the Puskas award for his incredible scissor kick goal.

The third-time best women’s coach winner Wiegman supervised Lionesses to their maiden international tournament victory on home soil at Euro 2022. The English squad scored twenty-two goals in the tournament and gave in only two.
During her era since 2021, England’s women’s team won twenty-five games and drew four games among a total of twenty-nine matches. Earps also played a pivotal role in keeping England’s sheets clean on four occasions and conceded only twice.
