NHL Norris Trophy
The Norris Trophy is one of the more exciting trophies handed out at the end of the season. It is given to the best defenseman in the NHL. In this article, I will predict this season’s winner.
The Colorado Avalanche’s Cale Makar has the best odds to win the Norris Trophy at 250. This makes sense, as Makar was given the award in 2022 and is widely considered a top defenseman in the NHL. The 25-year-old is one of the best offensive defensemen in the league and finished last season with 66 points (17 goals, 49 points) in 60 games.
This season has been no different; Makar has 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in nine games. Defensively, the Calgary, Alberta native is incredibly patient and anticipates opposing forwards and centers moves well. Makar is also a strong player and handles contact well.

The Vancouver Canucks’ Quinn Hughes has the second-best odds to win the Norris at 330. Hughes might be the most offensively-minded defenseman in the NHL. He already has 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) this season and had 76 points (seven goals, 69 points) last season.
With that being said, Hughes holds his own on the other side of the ice as well. The 24-year-old controls the pace of the game well and has excellent puck control. His one major flaw is his size (5’10, 170 lbs), but if Hughes put on ten pounds of muscle, this would no longer be a problem.

The New York Rangers’ Adam Fox has the third-best odds to win this award at 750. Fox is a stocky defenseman and won the Norris in 2021. He anchors the Rangers’ defense and creates much opportunity on the power play. The New York State native had 60 assists last season, and 28 of them came with a man advantage. Fox plays fantastic two-way hockey and is one of the smartest players in the league.
All three players are good options for the Norris, but I would bet on Quinn Hughes. Hughes controls the game very well and plays both sides of the ice quite well, making him the top defenseman in the NHL.
