Should the Boston Celtics sign Jaylen Brown to a supermax extension? | News Article by bettingoddsforfree.com

After a resilient uphill battle in which the Boston Celtics were able to erase a 3-0 series deficit in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat, the Cs fell short of making history, losing Game 7 in a blowout at home, 84-103.

Much of the dissection of their ultimate matchup against Miami will be boiled down to Jayson Tatum’s ankle injury that he incurred on the very first possession of the night.

Tatum was clearly hampered but battled through the pain, going on to play 42 ineffective minutes in which he only tallied 14 points.

While it’s clear that a healthy Tatum could have brought out a much different result in Game 7, his ankle turn has helped take pressure off of his co-star, who repeatedly came up short throughout the entirety of the series against the Heat.

In seven games, Brown averaged 19 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and a putrid 3.6 turnovers per game, including a career postseason-high eight giveaways in their final matchup.

Not only did his counting numbers take a hit while his turnovers skyrocketed, but his efficiency on offense also plummeted in the Eastern Conference Finals, shooting just 41.8 percent from the field, a ghastly 16.3 percent from deep, and 66.7 percent from the line — this mark was particularly disappointing considering that he rarely got to the stripe against the Heat to begin with.

Here’s a look at what Brown’s supermax extension could look like;

YearSalary
2024-25$50,050,000
2025-26$54,054,000
2026-27$58,058,000
2027-28$62,062,000
2028-29$66,066,000
Total:$290,290,000

Now eliminated from the playoffs, the Boston Celtics have to shift focus to some tough offseason decisions that lie ahead of them. Due to his All-NBA Second Team nomination, Jaylen Brown is now eligible to sign a "supermax" extension with the Cs, worth five years, $290 million.

The knee-jerk reaction would be to say that Brown isn’t worth that amount of money, as this new contract would make him one of the highest-paid players in the entire league.

But if Boston feels that way, they risk Brown feeling shorted, potentially leading him to request a trade off of the Celtics should they decline to extend him to his maximum possible contract. In that case, they’d have to find a suitable package in return for him, despite dealing him away with just one year remaining on his contract.

Regardless of how the Celtics feel about Brown moving forward, it’s clear that the best path for them moving forward would be to extend him to the max and decide later whether or not they want to retain him next to Tatum or try to find a trade to upgrade their core.
